Alternation ‘coded applicative (R)’ (Coded)

Applicative constructions are defined as constructions signalled by overt verbal morphology, which allow the coding of thematically peripheral argument or adjunct as a core object argument (Peterson 2007: 1). Applicative constructions are typically transitivizing mechanisms, which are generally found with intransitive (one-place) verbs. However, also transitive (two-place) can feature this alternation, becoming ditransitive (three-place) (Peterson 2007: 2). The coding of this alternation in Old English relies on the prefix be-/bi- (< germ. *bi- < PIE *bhi, Saibene & Buzzoni 2014: 372) literally ‘around’, but also with the function of transitivizing the verb (Mitchell & Robinson 2012: 58), or on the prefix ge- (with, among many others, a perfective sense). Only the latter has been found in my reference corpus.
