Alternation ‘cognate/kindred argument’ (Uncoded)

Introduces a new argument which is cognate or kindred to the verb meaning. Cognate arguments are etymologically and semantically related to the verb. On the other hand, kindred arguments are nouns that are only semantically connected to the verb. Visser (1963: 413) reminds that, in Old English, cognate object insertion is possible not only with intransitive verbs, but also with transitive ones. Both cognate and kindred objects can be either in the accusative, in the dative, or in PPs.
