Germanic continues a non-gendered reflexive third person pronoun of Proto-Indo-European origin, which eventually acquires other morphosyntactic functions such as that of a middle marker, most clearly in the North Germanic languages but this function is already appreciable in Gothic (Lühr 2017: 960).
