Root-derived verbs with a nasal suffixare attested in all the Germanic linguistic area. Their formation goes back to nasal-infixed roots ending in *h2/3, which were subject to a reanalysis of morpheme boundaries, hence giving rise to the suffix (Harðarson 2017: 938). The formation was, however, later productive only in Gothic and North Germanic. Verbs within the group, and hence the suffix, often have an inchoative/fientive meaning. Beside primary verbs, secondary verbs within the group can be denominal, deadjectival, or deverbal. Derived na-verbs often oppose to ja-verbs in the so-called anticausative alternation.
