In Old Latin some three-place verbs allow for the alternation between two constructions: the NomAccDat and the NomAcc(ad + Acc). R-like arguments of verbs such as SEND mitto are more frequently found in the ad + Acc phrase, but they can also be expressed by the dative case, as prototypical recipients of transfer events (e.g., with verbs such as GIVE do). Cf. dative alternation.
