In Old Latin some three-place verbs allow for the alternation between two constructions: the NomAccDat and the NomAcc(ad + Acc). R-like arguments of verbs such as BRING fero and GIVE do usually take the dative case. Sometimes (only rarely in the case of GIVE do) R-like arguments are expressed by means of the allative prepositional phrase (ad + Acc), that is the only PP used to encode the semantic role of direction with animate entities. Cf. dative alternation.
